This landlocked former Yugoslav state finally gained its independence in 2006 when Montenegro left the union. It has seen its fair share of troubles before and during the war with Kosovo, and there has since been some sporadic violence, but only in isolated areas.

Belgrade, the historical Byzantine Capital has been the first to take advantage of the newly found interest in Serbia, with steadily increasing visitor numbers, mostly for short breaks.
