Short Breaks in Barcelona with Visitor Reviews

Article: Modern Art in Barcelona
by Barbara Rizza Mellin

This vibrant Catalonian capital is blessed with outstanding architecture, from the mediaeval alleyways of the Gothic Quarter to the emphatic decorative art of Gaudi. The 4.5km of superb new beaches, chic cafes, the Port Vell with its new Imax cinema screen, huge aquarium, and nightlife of the "Olympic area" complement the colourful Barceloneta quarter. At the waters edge, the lift to the top of the Christopher Columbus monument offers a glorious view across the city.

"Barcelona has transformed itself from smug backwater into one of the most dynamic and stylish cities in the world. Summer is serious party time, with week-long fiesta fun. But year-round the city sizzles - it's always on the biting edge of architecture, food, fashion, style, music and good times.

The buildings, many the work of the eccentric genius Gaud, will blow you away. The art, with significant collections by Picasso and Mir, will make you clammy all over. The people, with their exuberance, their duende, their persistent egalitarianism, will fascinate you". Lonely Planet Guide - Barcelona

Review Barcelona City Breaks

Barcelona Visitor Comments...
I was a little hesitant about going to Barca at first, as it struck me that it was a little too trendy for my liking.

On arrival, I was pleasantly surprised, and thanks to my wife's insistance on going, we hade a really great time. It was pretty hot there, so when we had enough of looking around we crashed out on the beach for a while and did a bit of swimming too.

One word of warning, watch out for some of the kids on the beach, they are incredibly audacious theives, and any items of value should be well hidden, or even tied to your person if necessary!

We were on holiday in Mallorca last summer and since it was raining we decided on a day out to Barcelona by the Acciona ferry. It was three hours but the journey was worth it as Barcelona was just great. We therefore decided to miss the ferry back and stayed in Beca for the rest of the week!
