Visitors face snack ban in Rome

As one of the most visited city break destinations in Europe, Rome has a lot to offer, but they do not want their city messed up…

City Hall in Rome has banned the eating of snacks near its most famous monuments, with an €80 (£63) fine for those caught doing so.

It will mean that sitting on the Spanish Steps with a can of coke or eating crisps near the Trevi Fountain will technically be illegal, and the first tourists have already been fined according to the Italian capital's City Hall.

Three Tunisian men were fined for eating and drinking beer on the Spanish steps.

However, such measures should not put travellers off visiting one of the oldest and most culturally important cities in Europe.

With delights on offer such as the Coliseum and St Peter's Basilica, keeping snacks until further away or even in a cafe or restaurant is a small price to pay.
