Many choosing Eurostar for city break visits
More and more visitors are choosing to travel to their European city breaks using the Eurostar.
The company, which runs high speed trains from London to various cities in northern Europe, including Paris and Brussels, has reported a ticket sales rise of 25 per cent in the first half of this year.
Those looking for carbon neutral journeys and the lack of a knock on effect from rising oil prices are being cited as the reasons behind the increase.
Richard Brown, chief executive of Eurostar, said: "This impressive growth in traveller numbers clearly demonstrates that Eurostar's move to St Pancras International has opened up high-speed rail services to millions more people across the UK.
"The impact of rising oil prices on air fares, combined with growing awareness of the much greater environmental impact of flying, are causing more and more travellers to switch from plane to train."
Holidaymakers looking to visit European destinations in September will find that there will be an increase in the daily numbers of trains serving the London-Paris route, meaning half-hourly service in the morning and evening, and an almost hourly rate during the day.
