High-speed rail the choice of sustainable tourists
Taking trains to European city breaks are a better option than taking the plane, the Campaign for Better Transport has said.
A spokesperson for the campaign has commented that there needs to be more high speed rail choices.
He said: "We need to look at rail, and high speed rail, as ways to offer people sustainable travel choices.
"It needs to be looked at in a modal switch way, giving people options to switch from car and air journeys, on to low carbon rail journeys."
Trains such as the Eurostar can achieve speed up to 200 miles per hour, with the Eurostar to Paris and Brussels offering the only high-speed rail link in the country.
If high speed rail were introduced country-wide, it would be possible to get from Birmingham to London in less than an hour, and from Glasgow to the capital in three hours.
