City break and beach break in Riga

With its medieval look and status as the biggest city in the Baltic region, the city is a great place to visit for a city break.

However, just 45 minutes outside the city is some of the most calm and quiet beaches to be found in all of northern Europe.

Katie Hughes, writing in the Telegraph, claims her trip with the family was a great success.

"As we flew back to Britian, we tried to think of other European countries where we could enjoy uncrowded beaches, explore castle ruins and wander on the streets of a vibrant capital city all in the same afternoon. It was a short list."

An additional bonus is that much of the town is still relatively cheap to eat out in and go shopping, making it perfect for those looking to be a little more extravagant.
