Nice More than nice

The city that for many epitomises the Cote d'Azur, has a rather substantial history, and was populated by prehistoric man 400,000 years ago.

"You'll find dramatic roads, hairpinning above abyssal drops into a turquoise sea, wallets the size of yachts and yachts the size of towns…but in among the consumption and conspicuous crassness are hints of a romantic past," says Chris Moss, writing in the Telegraph.

However, when Queen Victoria visited in the 1890's, the destination took off as a hot spot for the rich and famous.

Those looking for the action should head down the promenade des Anglais, where muscled men mingle with gorgeous girls, in a whirlwind of wealth and excess, and is the perfect place for people watching.

Mr Moss suggests that for those looking for a party, the best area to go is the cours Saleya, where the flower market and many of the city's bars and restaurants are housed.

Nice may be a bit too glitzy for some, but if you are looking for the perfect exotic holiday that's not too far from home, the southern French city may be just what you are looking for.
